Hotels consume a large amount of water

The water consumptions of hotels are very different. A 3 star hotel in the town consumes 150 litres of water per guest and day, while a 5 star tourist hotel over 1,000 litres. The daily amount of toilet waste water (30 -50 litres per tourist and day depending on toilet model) is comparable  in both cases - the fluctuations come from the grey water

The mostly generally known problems can be summarized as follows:

  • Supply failures: A special annoyance for tourist especially in sultry, hot regions: particularly frequent the shower and washing installations  fail (around the lunchtime). Ask your staff at the reception: They can tell you stories about what they have to listen to during a water failure ...
  • Very poor tap water quality: Every tourist knows this phenomenon: After checking in, one turns on the faucet in the bathroom of the hotel for the first time – and a brown broth is rinsed  out. Also the tap water often has a strong chlorine smell and tastes metallic. A tap water, that comes from desalination plants can’t hide its salty tastes : Tea e.g. tastes undrinkable.
  • High electricity consumption due to the desalination of sea water: A high invoices of your electricity provider, if you supply your hotel with desalination plants.



The following problems are only partly known

But also disposal problems are frequent:

  • Disposal of sewage with raw, untreated excrements into the oceans. Below the sea-level the sewage  is often “invisibly” disposed of, untreated, via a disposal pipeline. Sometimes  the disposal is quite openly carried out via open channels. Many tourists know the brown rivulets which flow into the oceans on tropical beaches and which they jump over, because a wading through them is very distasting and dangerous.
  • Damage done to reefs and the environment by water pollution and over-salting of sea bays and lagoons. Particularly coral-reefs are very sensitive ecosystems, which can easily be damaged by slight changes of salt and nutrient concentrations. The tourist hotels destroy that that the tourist come to see : the value of the experience of their nature attractions.
